Soft Definition Longwear Lip Liner was the brand’s most-requested product. Allie wanted to launch a lip liner from the beginning. The version that shipped is not the version she started developing.

The original direction was a classic wooden sharpenable pencil. Allie spent months on that path before realizing the formula she actually wanted could not live in a traditional wooden pencil. The pivot is where the product came from.

Why the wooden pencil did not work

Allie wanted longevity. The problem was the structure. She was developing a lip liner that would sit under Effortless Lips, which is the brand’s balm-finish lip color. Effortless Lips is emollient by design. A standard wooden pencil formula could not deliver the kind of longwear that would hold under an emollient lip product on top. The Effortless Lips formula would eat through the liner over the course of a day.

She tried several wooden pencil formulas. None of them held. So she pivoted. She asked the lab whether it was possible to put a real longwear formula into something that still felt like a sharpenable pencil. The answer led to the version of the liner that launched.

The synthetic wood casing

The pencil is sharpenable in a sharpener the way a wooden pencil is. The barrel is a synthetic wood that behaves like wood for the customer but allows a longwear formula to live inside without drying out. A wooden casing limits what kind of formula can sit inside it over time. The synthetic version keeps the longwear formula stable through the life of the pencil while giving the customer the nostalgia and precision of a sharpenable wooden pencil.

The brand launched a matching pencil sharpener alongside the liners. It has a German blade and a clear base so customers can see when to empty it. Allie has said the right sharpener matters with this formula because the precision of a freshly sharpened tip is what makes the application work.

The formula: soft definition, not heavy pigment

The name is the design intent. Allie called the liner Soft Definition because she purposely tuned the pigmentation lower than most longwear lip liners on the market.

The reason is versatility. A higher-pigment liner draws a hard line that the customer either wears as a hard line or has to work to soften. Allie wanted a liner she could blend out with her fingertip into a softer, blurred edge for everyday wear, and that she could build up into a more precise edge if she wanted a sharper lip combo.

The formula also fills in the whole lip cleanly. Because the pigmentation is softer, the customer can color the entire lip with the liner as a stand-alone wash of color, which boosts the longevity of any lip combo on top. Allie does this with Fig as one of her favorite tricks for a longer-wearing mauve lip.

The liner has a working window before it sets. The customer has a few seconds to blend, blur, or correct after the line goes on. Once it sets, Allie has been direct: “they dry down, you guys, they do not budge.”

The four shades

Allie launched with four shades. Each one covers a specific use case across the Effortless Lips range and wears well on its own as a filled-in lip.

Honey is the lightest. A soft beige that leans slightly peachy, slightly neutral. The warmest of the four but still neutral overall. Allie pairs Honey with Daisy or Lily from Effortless Lips for the softest no-makeup-makeup nude lip. She does not usually fill in the whole lip with Honey. She uses it on the edges, blends, and adds her lip oil on top.

Almond is the mid-tone neutral brown and Allie’s favorite of the four. She has called it the most versatile and the one she wears most often. Almond is more of a contour shade. It gives the lips a sculpted edge without reading as a hard line. Allie’s signature combo is Almond lined and blended on the edges, with Dahlia from Effortless Lips filled in the middle. She has described this as her everyday lip combo.

Fig is the mid-tone mauve. The most universally flattering shade in the range because it sits in the natural lip-color territory of most customers. Fig fills in the whole lip as a stand-alone mauve lipstick, which is one of Allie’s favorite tricks. Mocha is the deepest in the range. A neutral leaning warm deep brown. Allie was specific about not making it pull too red, and she has said deep shades are technically harder to keep blendable because of the raw materials involved. Why four, not eight

Four shades covered the everyday lip-liner question for the customer Ravie is building for. A warm light neutral, a mid-tone contour brown, a mid-tone mauve, and a deep neutral brown. Each shade has a specific job. A future extension will only happen if a genuinely new shade category emerges that the original four do not cover.

The technique that makes the liner work

Allie applies the liners the same way every time. Lips clean and dry before the liner goes on. No lip oil or balm sitting on the lip surface, because the liner needs a clean surface to adhere to.

She works top lip first, then bottom. She traces the outline, then blends with her fingertip while the formula is still in its working window. The blending is what gives the soft, blurred edge she designed the formula around. After the formula sets, she does not try to move it. For filled-in combos, she colors the whole lip with the liner, lets it set a few seconds, then adds Effortless Lips or her lip oil on top.

What the customer voice has confirmed

Customers who tried the liner before launch consistently flagged two things. The application is creamy and easy. The wear is real longwear.
